CISCO CCNA EXPLORATION
Introduction
CISCO CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification is the first
step in gaining an internationally recognised networking professional
certification. The Cisco CCNA Exploration will provide you with a comprehensive
overview of networking. CISCO CCNA Exploration consists of 4 courses:
Exploration1 (Networking Fundamentals), Exploration2 (Routing and Routing
Protocols), Exploration3 (LAN Switching and Wireless) and Exploration4
(Accessing the WAN). On successful completion of CCNA certification an
associate will be able to design, install, configure, operate and maintain
small-to-medium networks.
The Courses
- Exploration 1 (Networking Fundamentals):
- focuses on network terminology and protocols, local area networks (LANs),
wide area networks (WANs), Open System Interconnection (OSI) models, cabling,
cabling tools, routers, router programming, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP)
addressing and network standards.
- Exploration 2 (Routing and Routing Protocols):
- focuses on router configuration, Cisco IOS Software management, routing
protocol configuration and TCP/IP.
- Exploration 3 (LAN Switching and Wireless):
- focuses on IP addressing techniques including Variable Length Subnet
Masking (VLSM), intermediate routing protocols (RIP v2, single-area OSPF,
EIGRP), command-line interface configuration of switches, Ethernet switching,
Virtual LANs (VLANs), Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and VLAN Trunking Protocol
(VTP).
- Exploration 4 (Accessing the WAN):
- focuses on advanced IP addressing techniques (Network Address Translation
(NAT), Port Address Translation (PAT) and DHCP), WAN technology and
terminology, PPP, ISDN, DDR, Frame Relay, network management and an introduction
to optical networking.

Fees
CISCO Exploration is an extra curriculum study and as such a nominal
charge will be required. As an example the cost of £250 per course
(£375 + VAT for UH alumni) was applied to
those undertaking the training in the academic year 2010 - 2011, but
this may be slightly increased for the academic year 2011 - 2012. The
nominal charge includes all CCNA Exploration tuition, laboratories and
CCNA Exploration examinations at
the University of Hertfordshire.
The final CCNA Certification examination cannot be taken at the
University of Hertfordshire and there will be an additional charge for
this paid to the
Certification Centre where you sit the exam.
