I am a computational linguistics researcher, now working for the ITALK project in the Adaptive Systems Research Group of the University of Hertfordshire's Science and Technology Research Institute. In this European collaborative project, we try and make robots learn to speak!

My core interest lies in computational grammar, both syntax and semantics as well as their interface. My academic training was in HPSG for syntax and Montague Grammar for semantics, and my PhD thesis (here) dealt with an issue of deep parsing with HPSG, specifically how best to parse word-order variations in relatively order-free languages such as Japanese and German. While my central interest remains in computational grammar, however, my research focus has shifted to language acquisition and the computational modelling thereof. This has also broadened my interest to include other aspects of linguistics such as phonology, as well as the machine learning techniques ---mainly associative classification involving 'experience' like perception.

I am also collaborating with the Dynamic Syntax group at King's College and Queen Mary, University of London. I have been building an incremental parser for DS and am now trying to apply the framework for grammar induction.
